Who I Am

Hi, I'm Nick.

I'm a Certified Solution Architect with a passion for solving problems through technology. While most people know me for my work in Business Intelligence, data architecture and Microsoft technologies, my background extends across almost every area of IT. Over the years I've worked in software development, web development, database design, mobile applications, networking, cloud platforms, edge computing and enterprise systems. Every role and every project has added another piece to the puzzle, shaping the way I approach technology today.

One thing that has always defined me is that I can't help looking for better ways of doing things.

Whether I'm at work, at home or somewhere completely unrelated to technology, I instinctively notice inefficient processes and start thinking about how they could be improved. It's almost impossible for me to switch that part of my brain off. Give me a problem, and I'll usually spend more time thinking about how to solve it than worrying about why it exists in the first place.

That curiosity has shaped my entire career. I've never wanted to specialise in just one technology because I've always been more interested in understanding how everything fits together. From writing software and building websites to designing databases, networking environments, cloud platforms and enterprise data architectures, I enjoy seeing the bigger picture and bringing different technologies together to solve real problems.

Technology itself has never been the objective. It's simply the toolkit I use to solve problems.

What really motivates me is creating solutions that make a genuine difference, whether that's saving people time, simplifying a complicated process, improving performance or enabling better decisions through data. That mindset is ultimately what led me into Solution Architecture.

My Approach

Although I spend much of my time working with data and Business Intelligence today, I don't approach problems purely from the perspective of a BI specialist. I approach them as someone who understands how applications, databases, infrastructure, cloud services, AI and people all fit together. Data is only one part of the bigger picture.

Artificial Intelligence is transforming our industry, and rightly so. I use AI every day to accelerate research, explore ideas and improve productivity. At the same time, I believe AI is only as good as the experience guiding it. A solution that works isn't always the right solution, and understanding architecture, performance, scalability and business context is just as important as generating code. AI is an incredible tool, but it's still only one tool in the architect's toolbox.

Much of my data and SQL knowledge actually came from building database-driven PHP websites long before I worked professionally in analytics. Developing applications taught me how databases behave in the real world, not just how to query them. That experience still influences the way I design data models, optimise performance and build scalable solutions today.

Throughout my career I've worked across a wide range of industries including recruitment, banking, automotive, manufacturing, utilities, healthcare, events and the charity sector. Every industry presents different challenges, but the underlying principles rarely change. Understand the business. Build solid foundations. Keep solutions as simple as possible. Design with the future in mind.

Today my focus is centred around Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, data architecture, solution architecture and modern AI-enabled technologies. I'm particularly interested in designing scalable, well-governed data platforms that are built to last. I enjoy solving complex technical problems, improving performance, simplifying architecture and helping organisations turn data into meaningful insight rather than simply producing more reports.

We rise by lifting others.

I'm also a firm believer that positivity breeds positivity. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn something, improve something or help someone else succeed. Throughout my career I've found that the strongest teams aren't built around the smartest individuals. They're built around people who share knowledge, encourage one another and genuinely want to see others grow.

One phrase that has always resonated with me is, "we rise by lifting others." It's a principle I try to live by in both my professional and personal life. Whether I'm mentoring a colleague, sharing knowledge through this blog, contributing to the wider technology community or helping someone overcome a technical challenge, I believe knowledge becomes far more valuable when it's shared.

Why This Blog Exists

This blog exists because I genuinely enjoy sharing what I've learned through real projects.

Everything I write comes from practical experience rather than theory. Sometimes it's a technical deep dive into Microsoft Fabric or Power BI. Sometimes it's about architecture, SQL, AI, performance tuning or data modelling. Other times it's simply a lesson learned from solving a difficult problem that I think others might benefit from. I don't believe in keeping knowledge to myself, and if sharing an experience helps someone else avoid a mistake or discover a better approach, then writing it was worthwhile.

Give Something Back

Outside of my professional career, I've always believed that technical skills are most valuable when they're used to help others.

I'm passionate about animals, which is what first led me to become involved with the National Foundation for Retired Service Animals (NFRSA). I originally joined because I hoped my experience in technology could help support a charity doing incredible work for retired police dogs, military animals and other service animals that have dedicated their lives to protecting us. Today, I volunteer as the Data and Technology Lead on the Management Committee, helping shape the charity's technology strategy through systems development, website management and improving its data and digital capabilities.

Alongside all of that, I spent seven years volunteering as a Special Constable with Thames Valley Police and twelve years with South East Coast Ambulance Service as a Community First Responder, becoming a Team Leader within my first year. Those experiences taught me the importance of remaining calm under pressure, making decisions based on the information available and, above all, putting people first. They're lessons that continue to influence both my professional life and the way I design solutions today.

Beyond Technology

Away from work, my interests don't really move very far away from technology. I originally trained as a vehicle technician, and my fascination with cars naturally evolved into understanding the technology behind them. That curiosity led me into automotive networking technologies such as CAN bus, FlexRay and LIN, as well as advising on vehicle cyber security for Fisker Automotive. I've always enjoyed understanding how vehicles communicate, experimenting with software-defined radio and exploring how software can interact with hardware.

That same curiosity extends into electronics and home automation. I've been building my own PCs for as long as I can remember, and I still enjoy choosing every component and building systems that are tailored to exactly what I need. I also enjoy designing printed circuit boards, building my own sensors and creating bespoke smart home solutions rather than relying solely on off-the-shelf products. Whether it's Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, LoRa, Matter or Thread, I enjoy understanding how different technologies work together and building systems that solve real problems around the home. I'm happiest when I'm designing, building or experimenting with something new.

Where It All Started

Looking back, none of this would have been possible without my Mum and Dad. They encouraged my curiosity from the very beginning and always made sure I had every opportunity to learn. From setting me up with an IBM PC with a monochrome green-screen monitor, later moving to an Intel 486, to upgrading to broadband as soon as it became available so I could spend more time learning how to build websites without dial-up disconnecting every time the phone rang, they always believed in investing in my education and interests. They supported every course, every project and every new challenge, and I'm incredibly grateful for everything they did to help me become the person I am today.
