Where do you go from here?

Where do you go from here with work and life?

For many years, I have gone through life doing various things, I have worked and/or volunteered in industries including manufacturing, car service work shops, banks, car hire, the medical field, law enforcement, and more recently in IT. I have a wealth of experience in different industries. I wake up every single day, no word of a lie, with a new idea which could be 'the next big thing' but I can't pursue them all, I am only one person, and I have to continue with my day-to-day businesses to ensure an income...or do I? I am a positive and happy person in general. I am self-motivated, supportive, and I will always look at the glass half-full. But recently I hit a point in my life where I just didn't know what I wanted anymore.

Did I want to continue with what I am doing? Did I want to pursue a specific idea that I had come up with? Did I want to quit it all and go travelling?

I actually got myself in to one of life's down points, which everybody does once in a while, I started realising that I am quarter of the way through my life, however sad that sounds, and although I have achieved a lot and probably more than a lot of people at my age, I have not hit the goals I set myself at age 15, my life plan didn't work out, as it sometimes doesn't unfortunately. But, I am not like some where I sit and mope, I sat and thought hard and done some brainstorming, I got a piece of paper and grabbed the laptop and started working out what would truly make me happy in life and work. I mean, I always enjoy certain aspects of my work and volunteering, but it is all beginning to become dry and I need something fresh to keep me motivated.

I always remember a speech that Steve Jobs, who is definitely one of my idols, gave at Stanford University Commencement in 2005. In that speech he mentioned multiple things which always make absolute sense to me, and one thing especially relates to me mentioning above about realising I am quarter of the way through my life already...

Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.

It is true, and actually it makes you realise as well that work isn't everything, and this is part of the reason why I enjoy volunteering and giving something back, because why not? Why not give some of your time back and make somebody else's life better. Money isn't everything, although it's great, it isn't everything. You should give plenty of time to your family so you don't regret it, give time to your friends, and travel the world, see things you thought were never possible. Learn something new, what have you genuinely got to lose? The only real limits are yours. As yourself now, how much time have your given to family, friends and yourself recently? I know that I get caught up with work sometimes more than I used to, and I have definitely let it slip, so it is important to keep tabs on that.

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give!

Travel makes one modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world...

Yes, life can be difficult and trying sometimes, even with some people, but you should never give up. And on the flip side, relating to work, if you are bored or have had enough of what you are doing at work, exactly what I mentioned above, then change it, I will say again...what have you got to lose? So many times in the past I have walked in to my previous employment and just made the decision to resign. Yes, of course I had commitments, but I couldn't stay there anymore, I just had to leave...there is always something else out there. It all resulted in me working for myself which has actually made me free and very happy, but as you can see from this post and actually from what Steve Jobs mentions in his quote below, there will still be times when you want to change things up, and there is no issue with that, you shouldn't be worried, just embrace change and enjoy it. You could argue that being self-employed makes it easier or harder to do so, but that's for you to work out when it comes to it.

Stop worrying about everyone else for a change, and especially the future, and think about your happiness for once...their happiness will follow, guaranteed. Gary Vaynerchuk, another one of my idols, because he is very honest, had a meeting with one of his employees recently, of which a video was posted on YouTube (below), and the employee decided that she had had enough of the daily grind, and wanted to travel. It was her time, and she decided to sell everything and just go, because actually she had nothing to lose, but time...Think about it. Think about Steve Jobs' quote above about remembering you are going to die, and something worth doing, something you will remember or be remembered for, and I mean good things here!

For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: 'If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?' And whenever the answer has been 'No' for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

See video below of VaynerMedia Employee giving up work and everything else to travel the world, showing she has nothing but time to lose. Gary even unexpectedly offers her a job back when she comes back if she wants it.

Below is the video of Steve Jobs Commencement Address at Stanford in 2005. A great motivational speech, that I like to listen to now and again. There is a lot to take away from this video and if you haven't seen it yet you really should take the time to watch from start to finish.

So what am I going to do from here you may ask? Well actually I am undecided still, but what I do know is that I am not going to continue with the same things that I have been doing in the past. I have already began eliminating some of what I do, reducing the time I spend and waste on things that don't benefit my 'now'. Let's be honest, I will always plan for the future, most of us will regardless, but I do intend on living the 'now' as I want to enjoy my life, and if I continually live for the future, I am going to spend the majority of my life working, to spend the last years when I am less active, sitting around. I want the active years to be the funnest years.

I am not giving everything up, but just enough to make a difference in my life, and that is all that matters. That is what you need to do, but do it now, not next week, that could be too late.
